Welcome to Class 6

Hello and welcome to Class 6. My name is Stephen Penny and I currently have the pleasure of teaching Class 6 at Milverton Community Primary School. I joined Milverton in 2013, having previously worked as a teacher, LSA and sports coach in other schools across Somerset and Devon.

In Class 6, we benefit from the fantastic support and skills of Mrs Pyne throughout the duration of the week.  She will support, challenge and extend your child’s learning within the class, in groups or on an individual basis. On a Tuesday afternoon, the children will be taught by Mrs Brierley during my PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) time.  The class will also be taught by SASP coaches on a Thursday afternoon.

Year 6 is a very exciting time for the children at Milverton; being top of the school they will have many learning opportunities and also some extra responsibilities. Class 6 children act as role models to our younger pupils and are expected to demonstrate our school values and display good behaviour.  A fun-filled residential trip, the opportunity to become a House Captain and the chance to showcase their talents in the school play are just some of the exciting and fun experiences for Year 6 children!

The transition from Class 5 to Class 6 is smooth, as we work closely as an Upper Key Stage 2 Phase Team and take part in shared Quest learning throughout the year. Our creative curriculum is built around termly quests which enable all children to access, engage and follow their interests. Wherever possible, we take our learning outside, making the most of our wonderful school grounds.

In Year 6, the curriculum content and learning expectations increase and we aim for all children to further develop their independence, growth mindset, problem solving and communication skills.  We understand that the children learn best in a happy and nurturing learning environment, so all children are expected to support and care for each other, demonstrating our School Values (to care, to aspire and to belong).

As always, the partnership between home and school is vital in supporting your child’s learning. The current method of communication is via email and this can be through the school mailbox for general queries or directly to the Class 6 email address if you would like to talk to me about an aspect of your child's learning. See email addresses below.

I look forward to working with you and your child - helping them to flourish and grow with confidence.

Stephen Penny
