Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSHE) & PSHE Curriculum Offer

At Milverton Community Primary & Pre-School, we provide a progressive and inclusive PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum that supports every child to flourish academically, socially and emotionally. We believe that developing children's wellbeing, character, relationships and understanding of the world is fundamental to their success both in school and beyond.

Our curriculum is underpinned by our school values of We Care, We Aspire and We Belong, which are woven throughout all aspects of school life. Through these values, we aim to nurture children who are kind, respectful, resilient and confident, enabling them to make positive contributions to their communities and society.

We want our children to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves safe, healthy and prepared for life in modern Britain. From their earliest years in Pre-School and Reception, children begin to develop an understanding of themselves as unique individuals and as members of a wider community. As they progress through the school, they deepen their understanding of relationships, wellbeing, diversity, personal responsibility and citizenship through a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum.

Our RSHE and PHSE curriculum provides a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where children can explore important topics, ask questions and develop the confidence to express their views and feelings. We teach children to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, respect differences, celebrate diversity and recognise their responsibilities towards themselves and others. Through this learning, pupils are empowered to make informed decisions, seek help when needed and develop the confidence to navigate life's opportunities and challenges.

As children move into upper Key Stage 2, they receive age-appropriate education about growing and changing, including puberty and the emotional and physical changes associated with adolescence. This prepares pupils for the next stage of their education and helps them develop healthy attitudes towards relationships, their bodies and personal wellbeing.

Our Curriculum

At Milverton Community Primary & Pre-School, our curriculum is informed by statutory Relationships Education and Health Education guidance and is carefully designed to meet the needs of our pupils whilst reflecting our inclusive school ethos.

We use a range of high-quality resources to deliver our curriculum, including:

  • Oak National Academy PSHE lessons
  • PSHE Association Relationships Education: Changing and Growing Up lesson pack
  • No Outsiders lessons and assemblies
  • NSPCC PANTS programme
  • NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe programme
  • Active Bytes Online Safety lessons
  • Whole School, Key Stage and Class Assemblies

These resources support pupils in developing their understanding of:

  • Families and caring relationships
  • Friendships and respectful relationships
  • Personal safety and safeguarding
  • Physical and mental wellbeing
  • Diversity, equality and inclusion
  • Online relationships and digital safety
  • Growing up and changing
  • Rights, responsibilities and citizenship

Learning is revisited throughout the school in an age-appropriate and progressive way, enabling children to build on prior knowledge and deepen their understanding over time.

Inclusion and Belonging

A key element of our curriculum is helping children understand that everyone belongs. Through our No Outsiders programme and wider school assemblies, pupils learn about equality, diversity and inclusion. Children are encouraged to celebrate differences, challenge stereotypes and understand that all people should be treated with dignity, kindness and respect.

We are committed to ensuring that every child feels represented, valued and welcomed within our school community. Our curriculum reflects a wide range of families, experiences and backgrounds, helping children develop empathy, understanding and acceptance of others.

Keeping Safe

Safeguarding is at the heart of our curriculum offer. Through the NSPCC PANTS and Speak Out Stay Safe programmes, children learn how to recognise unsafe situations, understand personal boundaries, identify trusted adults and seek help when they need it. Pupils are taught that they have a right to feel safe and that their worries should always be listened to.

Online Safety

As technology plays an increasingly important role in children's lives, online safety is taught regularly through our Active Bytes lessons and reinforced across the curriculum. Pupils learn how to use technology responsibly, communicate safely online, protect personal information and recognise potential risks in digital environments.

Consultation and Partnership

At Milverton Community Primary & Pre-School, we recognise that effective RSHE education is strengthened through collaboration with our whole school community. Our curriculum and policy are developed and reviewed through consultation with:

  • Pupils
  • Parents and carers
  • Staff
  • Governors
  • Safeguarding leads
  • External agencies and wider stakeholders

Pupil voice helps shape learning so that it remains relevant to the needs and experiences of our children. Parents and carers are kept informed about curriculum content and are encouraged to engage with the school's approach to RSHE. We value the expertise and perspectives of all stakeholders in ensuring our curriculum remains inclusive, responsive and effective.

The Impact of Our Curriculum

Through our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, we aim to develop children who:

  • Demonstrate empathy, kindness and respect for others.
  • Build healthy and positive relationships.
  • Value diversity and celebrate difference.
  • Understand how to stay safe online and offline.
  • Take responsibility for their wellbeing and actions.
  • Show resilience, confidence and independence.
  • Understand their place within the local, national and global community.
  • Are prepared for the next stage of their education and future life experiences.

By the time our pupils leave Milverton Community Primary & Pre-School, they will have developed the knowledge, skills and values needed to thrive as responsible, respectful and confident citizens, living out our school values of We Care, We Aspire, We Belong.
